ugly cosmos

These beloved stars —
tenuous night stretching above
as I dream,
and you are the dreamed.

They echo apart,
calling across the finite space,
bruised blue dissolving
to usher in wasted hours.

I shatter the crooked orbit of my body,
cast the shape of my dried heart
to hold the pulse of the endless now.
Fill me with your taking love.

Every ache moistens a dead dog’s orifices,
flows through saints’ wounds,
spat out like a glowing screen,
as if flickering were not enough to last.

The moon laps at what remains,
still wet enough to sink into,
and yet it is always too late
to name it grace.

This ugly cosmos —
it bears the weight of a space too narrow.
It gently folds me in for now,
like paper turned into coffins.
